Which DC Memorials Are Open at Night? Washington Night Hours After Dark

Most visitors ask the same question before they book a nighttime tour of washington dc: will anything be open? The short answer is yes, almost everything that matters. The memorials on the National Mall never close. This guide goes through each place, what is open after dark and what is not, and how to see the memorials without a tour at all.

Are the memorials open all night?

Yes. The National Park Service keeps the memorials of National Mall and Memorial Parks open 24 hours a day. That includes the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, the World War II, Vietnam Veterans and Korean War Veterans memorials, and the FDR and Martin Luther King, Jr. memorials. There is no fee to enter any of them.

So a night tour does not buy you entry. It buys you a ride between them, a guide, and an order that makes sense. You could stand on the same steps at midnight on your own.

What is open after dark, place by place?

Here is the whole picture on one table, with the source for each set of hours.

The pattern is simple. Anything outdoors on the Mall is open. Anything with a door, a lift or a security gate closes in the late afternoon.

Can you climb the Washington Monument after dark?

No. The monument opens from 9am to 5pm, and it closes on Independence Day, Christmas Day and one maintenance day a month. Every night tour sees it from outside, lit up on the skyline, which is how most people photograph it anyway.

Is the Jefferson open late?

Yes, all night, like the other memorials. It sits across the Tidal Basin from the Mall, so on foot it is a separate walk, and on a tour it is usually its own stop. Its dome is floodlit, and from the far side of the water it is one of the best night views in the city.

What about the memorials round the water?

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial both keep the same hours as the rest: open 24 hours a day, with rangers on duty from 9:30am to 10pm. The FDR memorial's own page adds "365 days a year". Both stand on the far side of the Tidal Basin from the Mall, so they belong to the basin loop rather than the walk to the Lincoln steps.

The trolley gives them one of its two long stops, about half an hour for both. The coaches usually stop at the King memorial, and the shared bike ride circles the water past the FDR memorial as well.

Is the flag raisers memorial open at night?

Yes. The Marine Corps War Memorial stands in Arlington, across the river, on the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Its 32-foot bronze figures raise a 60-foot flagpole, and by presidential proclamation the flag flies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. At night it is lit.

Can you see the White House at night?

From outside, yes. The grounds of President's Park are open year-round, but temporary closures and Secret Service operations can affect access at any hour. Every night tour stops outside the White House for photographs, and none goes in.

What about the Capitol?

Outside only. The night tours stop at the Capitol for photographs of the lit dome, usually from its west side above the reflecting pool. No night tour goes inside.

Can you visit Arlington after dark?

No. Arlington National Cemetery is open from 8am to 5pm every day. Night tours pass it from the road. The Marine Corps War Memorial nearby is a different matter: its flag flies 24 hours a day, and several coaches and private tours stop there at night.

Are any museums open at night?

Not the ones the tours pass. The National Air and Space Museum is open from 10am to 5:30pm, with free timed-entry passes for every visitor. The Smithsonian museums along the Mall are daytime visits, so plan them for the morning after.

Are rangers there at night?

Until 10pm. National Park Service rangers are on duty from 9:30am to 10pm every day, at the memorials that have them. After 10pm the memorials stay open, but there is nobody to answer questions.

Can you see the memorials without a tour?

Yes, and many people do. Take the Metro to the Smithsonian station, which sits on the Mall on the Orange, Silver and Blue lines. Walk west past the Washington Monument to the World War II Memorial, on to the Vietnam wall and the Korean soldiers, and up the Lincoln steps. The memorials at the west end are close enough to walk between.

What you give up is the commentary, the ride to the far ends, and the memorials across the river. The Jefferson Memorial is a separate walk round the basin, and Arlington is out of reach on foot at night.

Do road closures change what you can see?

Sometimes. The Park Service closes roads on and around the Mall for events and works: in the summer of 2026, for example, a full road closure ran from 22 July to 13 August. The memorials stay open on foot, but a tour's route may change, and the listings say so.

If a particular stop matters to you, check the tour's stop list the week you travel, and ask the guide on the night.

How do you get there and back by Metro?

The Metro runs until midnight Sunday to Thursday and until 2am on Friday and Saturday. Last trains vary by station, so check yours before you set out. The Smithsonian station puts you on the Mall, a short walk from the first memorials.

What might you still pay for?

Not the memorials. There is no fee to enter National Mall and Memorial Parks, and timed tickets are used only for Ford's Theatre and the Washington Monument, both in the daytime. After dark the whole loop is free.

What costs money is everything around it:

• Getting there: your Metro fare, or a taxi to the Mall and back.
• A guide or a ride: a night tour, from $48 a person on the cheapest seats to a private car priced per vehicle.
• Tomorrow's ticket: the Washington Monument's $1 online reservation fee, if you book the view from the top for the next day.
• Tips: if you take a tour, gratuities are left out of nearly every fare.

When does a tour beat going alone?

• When you have one evening. A tour covers the Capitol to the river in three hours without you planning a step.
• When you want the stories. A guide tells you who each memorial honours and why it stands where it does.
• When you want the river crossing. The flag raisers are a drive away.
• When walking is hard. The trolley has lifts on some vehicles, and a private car stops at the kerb.
