Washington Night Tour Ticket Upgrades Explained: What the Entry Ticket Buys

Look at the listings for a nighttime bus tour washington dc and some titles promise "entry tickets". It is the most misunderstood word in the whole market. Nothing on the night loop needs a ticket: the memorials are free and open all night. The ticket in the title is a timed pass for the next day. This guide explains what it buys, when you use it, what the same thing costs booked direct, and when it is worth adding.

What is the entry ticket in a night tour's title?

It is an optional upgrade, sold at checkout on the coaches that meet outside the National Archives. You pay extra and receive a timed ticket to one daytime attraction: the Washington Monument, the National Air and Space Museum, or the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

It does not get you into anything on the night. The night tour stops outside the memorials, which need no ticket. The upgrade is for your own visit the next day, without a guide.

The titles word it in different ways: "Entry Tickets", "Entry Ticket Upgrades", or simply "Tickets" at the end of a long name. In every case the word points to the add-on, not to anything that happens after dark. Read past it to the fare, the kerb and the stops.

When do you use it?

On the next available day after your night tour. The attraction assigns the date and the time, and they appear on the ticket when it arrives. You cannot pick them in advance, and the operator cannot change them.

So the upgrade suits a traveller whose next day is free. If you fly home the morning after, or your next day is already booked, it is money for a slot you cannot use.

Which attractions can it be for?

• The Washington Monument: a timed ticket to go up inside, in the daytime.
• The National Air and Space Museum: a timed-entry pass for the museum on the Mall.
• The third museum: the African American history museum. Its pass rules are set by the museum; check them on its own site before you pay.

What does each one cost booked direct?

Very little, which is the point of this guide. Here is each upgrade beside what the attraction itself charges.

The upgrade's own price shows at checkout. Weigh it against the figures in the last column: what you are paying for is somebody else holding the slot.

What does the Washington Monument cost if you book it yourself?

Nothing, apart from a small fee online. Every visitor aged 2 or over needs a ticket, and there is no admission charge. Tickets reserved online carry a $1 reservation fee each, and new tickets are released every day at 10am.

There are also free same-day tickets at the Washington Monument Lodge on 15th Street, between Madison and Jefferson drives. The window opens at 8:45am, a queue forms well before that, and one person aged 16 or over may take up to six. Supplies usually run out.

Is the Air and Space museum free?

Yes. Admission to the National Air and Space Museum is always free, but every visitor, of any age, needs a free timed-entry pass. You can reserve up to nine at once. The museum is open from 10am to 5:30pm, and a pass does not limit how long you stay.

That makes the Air and Space upgrade the easiest to replace: book the free passes yourself and choose your own time.

Can you choose the day and time?

Not with the upgrade. The ticket is valid for the next available day after your night tour, at the date and time the attraction assigns. If you need a morning slot to fit a flight, book direct instead.

How do the tickets arrive?

By WhatsApp, on the day of your night tour. Give a WhatsApp number when you book, or contact the operator before the tour if you did not. Keep your phone charged: the ticket arrives the same day, and you will need it the next morning.

Can you get a refund on an upgrade?

Not once it has been issued. The night tour itself refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours ahead, but an attraction ticket that has been sent to you is non-refundable. If your plans may change, book the tour without the upgrade.

Which tours sell it, and which include a pass?

The Signature coach and the DC Guided coach, both from outside the National Archives, sell the upgrades as options. You add them at checkout; the from-price is without them. The same Signature coach is sold on a second platform with the same choices.

What about the open-top and glass-top upgrades?

These are the other upgrade in the market, and they are about the night itself. The best-selling coach's from-price buys a closed-top coach; a seat in the convertible minibus costs more, and on its own listing it is $109 a person. From October to March the convertible runs with a glass top, so an open-top evening is a warm-month one.

Book the convertible for a smaller group of up to 15 and a glass roof to look up through. Do not book it in December expecting open air.

What if the monument is closed the next day?

It happens more often than people expect. The Washington Monument closes on Independence Day, on Christmas Day and on one maintenance day every month. The rest of 2026's maintenance days are Monday 5 October, Wednesday 4 November and Tuesday 8 December.

Because the upgrade is for the next available day, a closure can push your slot back a day. If you are in town only one more morning, check the date before you add the monument upgrade, or choose the museum instead.

Upgrade or book it yourself: how do the two compare?

Is a ticket upgrade worth it?

It is worth it when your next day is free and you would rather not queue at 8:45am or refresh a booking page at 10am. It is not worth it when you want to choose your time, when your plans may change, or when the attraction is free to book anyway.
