Two things decide what a Washington night tour feels like: when it gets dark, and how cold the stops are. Sunset moves almost four hours through the year, and the evening low from about 30°F to 72°F. Before you book a nighttime tour of washington dc, check your month.
The biggest coaches leave at 7:30pm all year. In late June the sun sets about 8:38pm, so you spend the first hour in daylight and dusk. In early December it has been dark since about 5:15pm, and you set out two hours into the night.
Every stop is outside, so the temperature is the one you stand in. Night tours run near the average low, not the high. A July evening is warm, and a January one is near freezing.
Rain rarely stops a tour. Most run rain or shine, and operators who cancel for the weather offer you a new date or a refund. What rain changes is the ride: a coach or the heated trolley is a better choice than an open-air cart or a bike.
Each month gives the average high and low at Reagan National, NOAA's 1991-2020 normals, and the sunset and dark times on the 15th from the U.S. Naval Observatory. Use the low for your evening.
The coldest month. Evenings fall towards the average low of 30°F, and it is dark by 5:40pm, so a 7:30pm start is nearly two hours after dark. The coaches are heated. Wrap up for every stop, because each one is outside.
Still cold, with an average low of 32°F and the least rain of the year, 2.62 inches. The sun sets at 5:46pm by mid-month. Every tour starts in the dark, and the glass tops stay on the convertible buses.
The clocks go forward on the second Sunday, and sunset jumps an hour, to 7:15pm by mid-month. Early in March a 7:30pm tour starts in the dark; after the change it starts at dusk. Lows average 39°F. Peak bloom can come in the last week.
Cherry blossom season: peak bloom usually falls between the last week of March and the first week of April. The 2027 festival runs from 20 March to 11 April. Sunset is 7:45pm by mid-month, and lows average 48°F.
Warm evenings, with lows around 58°F and 3.94 inches of rain. The sun sets at 8:14pm by mid-month, so a 7:30pm start is in daylight. Book a later start, or expect the floodlights to come on part-way round.
The longest evenings. Sunset reaches 8:35pm by mid-month and 8:38pm late in the month, the latest of the year. The first hour of a 7:30pm tour is daylight. Lows average 68°F, the open-air rides are at their best, and the glass tops come off.
The hottest month, with an average high of 90°F and the most rain, 4.33 inches. Evenings fall to about 72°F. The sun sets at 8:33pm by mid-month. Carry water.
Hot and humid, with lows around 71°F. The light starts to shorten: sunset is 8:03pm by mid-month, and fully dark by 8:31pm. A 7:30pm start still begins in daylight.
Evenings cool to about 64°F. Sunset moves from 7:16pm at mid-month to 6:51pm by the 1st of October. By the end of the month, a 7:30pm tour starts in full dark.
The glass tops go on the convertible buses this month. Lows average 52°F, and it is dark by 6:56pm at mid-month. Every 7:30pm tour now starts after dark, with the memorials lit from the first stop.
The clocks go back on the first Sunday, and it is dark by 5:23pm at mid-month. A 7:30pm start is two hours after dark. Lows fall to 42°F, so bring gloves for the stops.
The earliest dark of the year: sunset about 4:46pm in the first week. The National Christmas Tree is lit in early December, and one coach runs a holiday-lights tour. Lows average 34°F, so book a warm ride.

For the memorials lit from the first stop, come between October and February. You start in full dark on any tour, and the crowds are thinner, but you need a warm coat.
For warm evenings and open-air rides, come from May to September. The glass tops come off the convertible buses, and the bikes and e-carts are pleasant. The catch is the light: book a later or private start if you want full dark.
Spring brings the cherry blossoms, usually in the last week of March or the first of April, and the biggest crowds of the year. In 2026, peak bloom came on 26 March. December brings the National Christmas Tree and the holiday-lights tour; its 2026 details have not yet been published.
If you can choose, start about half an hour before the dark time for your month. You catch the last light behind the Washington Monument, then watch the floodlights take over. In June that means about 8:30pm, not 7:30pm.
The fixed coaches cannot move, so in summer choose a tour that sets its own time. The private cars agree the time with you, and the private bike ride starts anywhere between 5pm and 9pm. Rangers are on duty until 10pm, if you want to ask one a question.
Plan the end too. Metro runs until midnight from Sunday to Thursday and until 2am on Friday and Saturday, but last trains vary by station, so check yours.
