Washington Night in Winter and Spring: Holiday Lights and Cherry Blossoms

Two seasons change a night on the Mall more than any other. In December the city lights its Christmas trees and the dark comes early. In spring the cherry trees round the basin flower for a few days, and the evenings are light until after seven. This guide covers both, and whether a trolley tour washington dc night or a coach suits each.

When are the holiday lights on?

The National Christmas Tree stands on the Ellipse, south of the White House. It is lit in a ceremony in early December: in 2025 that was Thursday 4 December. Several days after the ceremony the grounds open to the public, and you can visit until 1 January. The 2026 dates have not been published yet, so check before you fix your trip.

The tradition began on Christmas Eve 1923, when President Calvin Coolidge lit a 48-foot fir from Vermont. Around the tree each year stands a display of smaller trees with ornaments designed by students from every state and territory. You pay nothing to visit; if you want to attend the lighting ceremony itself, you need a ticket through recreation.gov.

How late are the tree's lights on?

The lights are typically on from sunset until 10pm Sunday to Thursday, and until 11pm on Friday and Saturday. In early December sunset is at about 4:47pm, so the tree is lit whenever you pass it on a night tour. On a 7:30pm coach you reach it with hours to spare.

Is there a holiday lights tour?

Yes, in the holiday season. A three-hour coach from Navy Memorial Plaza makes five stops of about 20 minutes at the big trees and light displays. The listing names them: the National Christmas Tree by the White House, the Christmas tree in Old Town Alexandria's Market Square, the tree and the holiday lights at National Harbor and the Gaylord, the Capitol Christmas Tree on the West Lawn, and the Canadian Embassy's tree.

You pay $69 a person, and the coach is climate-controlled. Arrive 20 minutes before the start to check in. It is a tour of trees and lights, not of the memorials, so if you want both, book a regular night tour on another evening.

What do the regular night tours add in December?

On the Signature coach from outside the National Archives you also see the holiday lights outside the White House and the Capitol in December, on its usual route. The other coaches keep their usual stops. Because it is dark so early, your 7:30pm start is fully floodlit from the first stop, whichever coach you choose.

How cold is a winter night on the Mall?

Cold enough to plan for. Evening lows at Reagan National average about 34°F in December, 30°F in January and 32°F in February. Every stop is outside, and you spend it standing still, which feels colder than walking.

Are the buses open in winter?

No. USA Guided Tours switches its convertible buses to glass tops from October to March; its holiday-lights listing gives 15 October to 15 March. The glass-top minibus still gives you a roof to look up through, with a group of up to 15.

The trolley is heated in winter, with plastic windows that roll down against the cold. You see a little less through them, but you stay warm between stops. The night trolley tours page compares it with the open-air rides, which are best left to spring.

Which night tour suits December best?

That depends on how much cold you will stand for the view.

• For warmth: the trolley, heated with its windows down, and its two long stops that you can cut short. Or a private car, which waits at the kerb while you walk up to each memorial and back.
• For the lights themselves: the holiday coach, with its five stops at the big trees, or the Signature coach, which adds the White House and Capitol lights to the usual memorials.
• For a view upward: the glass-top minibus from Navy Memorial Plaza, for up to 15, with the Washington Monument above you through the roof.
• Not in deep cold: the bike rides and the open-air carts. Save them for spring.

Where do you see the blossoms after dark?

Round the Tidal Basin, where the Yoshino cherries that decide peak bloom stand. At night the trees are dark except where the memorials' floodlights reach them, so the view you want is across the water, towards the lit dome of the Jefferson Memorial with the blossom in the foreground.

What about the weeks between?

Spring and autumn are the easiest seasons for a night tour. In mid-April the sun sets at about 7:45pm and the evening low at Reagan National averages about 48°F; in mid-October sunset is about 6:30pm and the low about 52°F. The open-air rides make sense again, the convertible runs open once the glass-top months are over, and you can start a 7:30pm tour in dusk and finish in full floodlight. And the Washington Monument keeps its 9am-to-5pm hours all year, so a climb the next morning fits either season.

When do the cherry blossoms peak?

Peak bloom is the day when 70% of the Yoshino cherry blossoms round the Tidal Basin are open. It is most likely between the last week of March and the first week of April. In 2026 it came on 26 March. The record range runs from 15 March, in 1990, to 18 April, in 1958.

The trees typically bloom for several days, and the weather decides how many. Cool, calm days stretch it; rain and wind end it abruptly. The National Park Service says peak bloom is almost impossible to forecast more than about 10 days out, so you cannot book for it months ahead with any certainty.

When is the 2027 festival?

The National Cherry Blossom Festival runs from 20 March to 11 April 2027. The festival spans the likely bloom and more, so treat the dates as a window: they do not promise you blossom on any one night. If you can only come for a weekend, aim for the middle of the window and keep your tour refundable.

Which night tours include the blossoms?

Most night tours pass the basin, and many stop at a memorial on its banks. The coaches from outside the National Archives add a cherry blossom walk in season, from late March to early April. The shared bike ride circles the basin, which puts you among the trees rather than beside them.

What time is it dark in blossom season?

Later than in winter, and later than most visitors expect. On 15 March the sun sets at about 7:15pm and it is dark by 7:42pm. On 15 April sunset is about 7:45pm and darkness about 8:13pm. So a 7:30pm tour in blossom season starts in dusk, and the trees are lit by the memorials' floodlights rather than by the sun.

How do you plan around a bloom that moves?

Book a tour that refunds in full up to 24 hours ahead, which is almost all of them. Watch the Park Service's bloom reports from mid-March. If the peak moves, move your evening. For the holiday season, book once the tree's dates are published.
