Best Washington Night Tours Compared: Coach, Van, Private, Bike or Trolley

The Washington Night guided tours all sell the same free, floodlit memorials. Nobody sells a ticket to them, because none is needed. What you choose between is how you ride, how long you spend on foot, where you start and who is beside you. This guide sets those side by side so you can pick in a few minutes.

Which night tour is best for a first visit?

For most first-time visitors it is the best-selling coach. It leaves Navy Memorial Plaza at 7:30pm, it costs $58 a person, and its guide gets off with you at nine stops of 15 to 20 minutes. It is also one of the routes that crosses the river to the flag raisers, whose flag flies day and night.

It has two drawbacks. The coach seats about fifty, so each stop is shared with a crowd. And the start time is fixed: in June, the first hour is in daylight. If either matters, keep reading.

How do the tours compare at a glance?

Here is every night tour on one table, one row per product. Where a tour is sold on two platforms it appears once. Read the price basis: a few are per vehicle, not per person.

The time-on-foot column is the one to read twice. A tour of nine stops of 15 to 20 minutes gives you well over two hours at the memorials. A tour of six stops of 5 to 10 minutes gives you well under one.

What does the cheapest seat get you?

The lowest fare is $48 a person, and quite different tours share it. The first is a van for up to 13 with a driver-guide, eight stops of 10 to 20 minutes, and a free next-day pass to the Air and Space museum. It collects you at 7:00pm at the Marriott at Metro Center or at 7:10pm at Navy Memorial Plaza.

The second is an open-air e-cart for nine, from 500 5th Street NW: two hours, seven short stops and a live guide. It sells day, sunset and night slots on one listing, so pick the night one.

Most coaches cost a little more, $58 to $69 a person. For that you get a longer evening and more time on foot.

Is a van worth the extra over the coach?

The Grand Hyatt van costs $99 a person, $41 more than the best-selling coach. It scores 4.9 from more than 1,700 reviews, the highest of any night tour with over a thousand. What you pay for is a van of up to 12 instead of a coach of fifty, and ten stops that you explore on your own.

If you want to hear every word from a guide at every stop, the coach may suit you better. If you want quiet and a small group, the van is worth it. The small-group night tours page lists every van and cart, with their pickup points.

When does a private tour pay off?

A private tour is priced per vehicle, or tiered per person, so the fare per head falls as your party grows. The car from your hotel is $595 for one to four. The minivan is $275 for up to five. Split the fare and compare it with a coach seat:

• For two: about $297 each in the car for four, against $58 on the coach. Private costs several times more.
• For four: about $148 each in the car, or $68 each in the minivan. That is near the price of a van seat, and it comes to your door.
• For five: about $55 each in the minivan, which is below most van seats.

So private pays off from about four people, and earlier if pickup, a later start or a wheelchair matters. The private night tours page shows every car, the walk and the bike.

Is the bike tour hard?

No. The shared ride covers about 4 to 5 miles in three hours, graded easy, on mostly flat ground round the Mall and the Tidal Basin. It stops often, 14 short stops in all, and it supplies a bike, a helmet, lights and a reflective vest. Children's kit, trailers and tandems are available.

Trolley or bus?

Old Town Trolley's night loop runs two and a half hours with three stops on foot, the two longest about half an hour each. The coaches make nine or more shorter stops with a guide beside you. So the trolley suits a traveller who wants to wander; the coach suits one who wants to be told what they are looking at.

The trolley has two practical advantages. It is heated in winter, and some trolleys carry a lift for wheelchairs. Its crossing to the flag raisers is currently skipped for a bridge closure. The night trolley tours page compares it with the open-air rides that are not trolleys.

Which tours cross the river to Arlington?

The best-selling coach's route includes the Marine Corps War Memorial, and so does the private car from your hotel. Several other coaches, vans and private tours stop there too. None of them enters Arlington National Cemetery, which closes at 5pm; they pass it from the road.

Check the stop list on the tour you book. Routes change for road closures, and the trolley's stop there is skipped for now.

Which ones pick you up?

• At your door: the private cars, and the private bike, whose guide meets you where you stay.
• At a downtown hotel: the moonlight van, for bookings of two or more. From Virginia or Maryland you meet it at the Marriott at Metro Center.
• At a named point: the $48 van, at 7:00pm or 7:10pm.
• At a kerb: every coach, the Grand Hyatt van, the Top rated van, the carts, the trolley and the shared bike. Each kerb is on the meeting-points map.

Which work with a wheelchair?

A few. The trolley has lifts on some vehicles if you tell the operator 24 hours ahead. The private minivan for five, the four-hour custom tour and the private walk on the Mall all list wheelchair access. The coaches and most vans say they are not suitable, and the Grand Hyatt van has no storage for wheelchairs or scooters.

What about children?

Most tours take children, but read the small print. Every child on the e-cart needs a seat and a seat belt. The shared bike ride has kit for children of all sizes. The $48 van asks that under-18s travel with an adult. A private car sets the pace to your family's, and some offer infant seats.

A three-hour evening is long for a small child. The e-cart and the open-air minibus both run two hours.

Which is best in winter?

From October to March the choice narrows. The convertible minibus runs with its glass top on, the trolley is heated with its windows rolled down, and the coaches are closed. Evening lows at Reagan National average about 34°F in December, so the bike and the open-air carts are cold.
