Vans of twelve from the Grand Hyatt
You meet outside, not in the lobby: at the side entrance of the Grand Hyatt on 11th Street, at 1000 H Street NW. The departure is in the early evening, and the exact time shows when you pick a date. Make sure the booking has your mobile number, because on the day the operator texts you the guide's name, a number to call and fuller meeting instructions.
Each van seats 12 at most, and a departure can carry 48 in all, so on a busy night more than one van may leave together. That is what makes this different from a coach: getting a dozen people off and back on takes a minute, so more of the three hours is spent at the memorials. Where the hotel sits among the other starting points, with the stations nearby, is on the meeting-point map.
Ten stops you explore on your own
This is a driver-guide tour. The stories come on the road, between stops; at each stop you step out and look around yourself, for 5 to 20 minutes. The longest stops, 20 minutes each, are the Jefferson Memorial on the Tidal Basin and the World War II Memorial with its fountains. The Lincoln Memorial gets 15, enough to climb the steps to the statue and look back down the Reflecting Pool.
Every stop is outside, and every memorial is free and open 24 hours, with National Park Service rangers on duty until 10pm. Nothing you see tonight needs a ticket. The White House and the Capitol are seen from outside, and the Washington Monument, which closes at 5pm, is one you pass. The memorials page covers each one after dark.

Ford's Theatre to the White House: the route
From the hotel the van passes Ford's Theatre, the FBI headquarters, the National Archives, the Navy Memorial and the National Gallery of Art before the first stop, at the Capitol and the Capitol Reflecting Pool below it. It then runs down the Mall past the Smithsonian Institution Building and the Washington Monument, round the Tidal Basin to the Jefferson Memorial and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, and back up to the World War II and Korean War Veterans memorials.
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial comes next, with the Three Soldiers statue and the Vietnam Women's Memorial beside it, then the Lincoln Memorial, and the last stop is the White House. The van then brings you back to the Grand Hyatt. The operator warns that the route can change for construction or road closures.
When the van beats the coach
The nearest thing on a coach is the 7:30pm coach from Navy Memorial Plaza, which costs $58 a person. The difference is in what the extra $41 buys.

The three hours, stop by stop
- Early evening. Meet outside the Grand Hyatt's 11th Street door; the time is on your booking and in the day's text.
- Down Pennsylvania Avenue. Past Ford's Theatre, the National Archives and the Navy Memorial.
- The Capitol end. Fifteen minutes at the Capitol and five at the pool below it.
- Round the Tidal Basin. Twenty minutes at the Jefferson, fifteen at the King memorial.
- The war memorials. World War II (20 minutes), Korean War (10) and the Vietnam memorials (about 25 in all).
- The Lincoln and the White House. Fifteen minutes, then ten.
- Back to the hotel. About three hours after you left.

- You want the memorials without the size and pace of a full coach.
- You like to wander at each stop rather than follow a guide.
- You are travelling with a stroller: it is stroller accessible, and infant seats are listed.
- You are staying downtown, near the hotel where it starts.

- You want the lowest fare. The 7:30pm coach costs $58 a person and adds the flag raisers across the river.
- You want your own vehicle. The private car collects you at your door, for $595 for up to four.
