When Washington Night Falls: What Time It Gets Dark in DC, Month by Month

Sunset and full dark, month by month

The table gives the U.S. Naval Observatory's times for the middle of the Mall in 2026, on the local clock. "Full dark" is the end of civil twilight, when the sun is six degrees below the horizon and the last blue has gone from the sky: the moment floodlit stone stands out against black. Other years fall within a minute of these, so read them as "about".

The last column is the one that matters for most evenings out. Every month from October to February, a 7:30pm start is already dark. In March and September it is dusk. From April to August it is daylight, and in June the sun is still up for an hour after you leave.

What a 7:30pm start looks like in June and in December

The biggest coaches leave at a fixed time all year: the coach from Navy Memorial Plaza goes at 7:30pm sharp, and the coaches outside the National Archives ask you to arrive by 7pm for the same start. That fixed start is the reason the same ticket looks so different in June and in December.

In the middle of June the sun sets at about 8:35pm and full dark comes at about 9:07pm. So on a three-hour coach, the first hour is daylight, the next half hour is dusk, and only the last hour and a half is dark. On the Navy Memorial coach the first stops, the White House and the Capitol, are seen by day; the later ones are lit. One traveller on an August van started while it was still light and saw two memorials in daylight before the rest lit up. That is not a flaw, but it is worth knowing before you book.

In early December the sun sets at about 4:46pm and it is dark by 5:16pm. By 7:30 it has been dark for more than two hours, and the whole evening is lit from the first stop to the last. It is also colder: the average December low at Reagan National is about 35°F, which is why what to wear changes more than the view does.

The two nights the clock moves

Daylight saving time ran from 8 March to 1 November in 2026, and those two dates move the dark by an hour overnight. On 7 March it was dark at 6:34pm; on 8 March, at 7:35pm. A 7:30pm start went from dark to dusk in one day. On 1 November it works the other way: sunset jumps back to 5:08pm and full dark to 5:35pm, and every evening tour from then until March starts in the dark.

Which season suits which evening

• October to February: dark from the start. Every memorial is lit at every stop, and the evenings are cold.
• March and September: dusk at the start, then dark. You get the sky changing colour behind the Capitol and the floodlights coming on in one evening.
• April to August: daylight first. The early stops are daytime views, the later ones are lit, and the evening is warm.
• Cherry blossom season: peak bloom usually falls between the last week of March and the first week of April, when a 7:30pm start is close to sunset. The 2027 festival runs from 20 March to 11 April.
• December: the holiday lights. The National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse is lit from sunset until about 10pm, Sunday to Thursday; its 2026 dates have not been published.

Starts that are not 7:30pm

Not every evening runs on the coach clock. A few rides sell a sunset slot and a night slot on one listing: the open-air minibus from the Arlo Hotel, $52 a person, and the e-cart on 5th Street, $48 a person. If you want the dark, book the night slot, not the sunset one. The $48 van picks up at 7:00pm at the Marriott at Metro Center and at 7:10pm at Navy Memorial Plaza, twenty to thirty minutes ahead of the coaches.

What stays open after dark, and what does not

The memorials never close. The National Park Service keeps them open 24 hours, with rangers on duty from 9:30am to 10pm, and there is no fee. You can climb the steps of the Lincoln Memorial at 11pm, or cross the Tidal Basin to the Jefferson Memorial at midnight. What each looks like lit up is on the memorials page.

Two places keep office hours whatever the sky does. The Washington Monument is open 9am to 5pm, so no evening goes up it, and Arlington National Cemetery closes at 5pm, so evenings that cross the river see it from the road.
